Recreation opportunities and Activities you can expect at CareChoice Clonakilty:
Overview
The Activity Leaders at CareChoice Clonkailty are Michelle Bravo and Catriona O'Mahony. Michelle has a Fetac 5 qualification in care of the elderly and is particularly interested in assisting our residents to maintain their skills and interests. Catriona has a Social Science Degree and is passionate about our residents getting out of the house and forging links with the local community. With this in mind she organises weekly trips out and about. Together with the the Director of Recreation for the group, Clodagh Whelan Michelle and Catriona offer a range of innovative recreation choices.
The philosophy behind the recreation programme is that a residents’ social life should not cease simply because they have moved to long term care, the programme is fun and collaborative and looks at the leisure needs of each person as an individual. We are happy to cater for any interests our residents may have and to this end we have offer activity choices for both groups and individuals.
The recreation team will work with residents and their families to ensure that residents can continue with their individual hobbies and interests or indeed take up new ones.
Social activities- coffee mornings, story telling, mens & ladies groups
We discuss many topics, recently we have talked about, modern courting rituals, religion, politics and we are still talking to each other!!
Outings to local events, shopping centres etc.
It is important to the Recreation team that CareChoice residents become part of the community. Therefore outings are organised regularly. For example our residents visit the local shops and garden Centres as well as Barryroe Show and local beaches.
Musical afternoons
We regularly welcome local musicians to play at CareChoice Clonakilty. There is a wide range of music from traditional tunes to songs to which we can dance.
Fit for Life
Fit for Life provides an integration of exercise and therapies that can benefit anyone who wishes or needs to improve their quality of life. The leaders cater for individuals of all levels of capabilities where ‘independence' can relate to a wide range of goal setting. These weekly sessions offer safe chair based fitness classes to the CareChoice Clonakilty residents and are very popular.
Art and Craft
The residents have many art and craft opportunities such as card making, painting and working with clay. Recently the residents exhibited their work for family, friends and members of the local community to enjoy.
Massage
Our massage therapist visits every Wednesday and provides a variety of therapies such a foot massage, back treatments etc.
Bingo and board games
The weekly game of bingo is always lively with hotly contested prizes. Also many of our residents enjoy scrabble, chess and other games.
Card group
We play mainly 25 or 45. There is always healthy competition and reminiscence about card games in the past.
Gardening
The Clonakilty residents are keen gardeners, this year we have grown tomatoes, chillis and some herbs. The residents also maintain many window boxes and indoor plants.
Baking
Residents are very much enjoying the regular baking sessions. We make scones, cakes and tarts and the bread making has proved a particular favourite.
The Clon Snug
The Clon Snug opens regularly to create a pub atmosphere inhouse. We enjoy a drink, a chat and few songs together.
